Founded in 1942 by the visionary entrepreneur A.Y.S. Gnanam, St. Anthony’s Hardware has grown from humble beginnings into one of Sri Lanka’s most respected and diversified conglomerates. What began as a scrap iron trading venture has evolved into a multi-industry enterprise, spanning hardware, construction, textiles, energy, and retail.
Our journey reflects a legacy of innovation and resilience. In 1944, we launched St. Anthony’s Paradise Stores, distributing essential goods across the island. The 1960s saw the birth of Anton, a pioneering brand in PVC manufacturing, and the establishment of Ceylon Synthetic Textile Mills through a landmark joint venture with Japanese partners. We further expanded our footprint with the formation of Rhino Roofing in 1965, which has become a leader in roofing solutions.
Our commitment to excellence led to the inception of Tokyo Cement in 1982, Sri Lanka’s first automated cement factory, now a cornerstone of the nation’s construction industry. Embracing sustainable practices, we ventured into renewable energy with St. Anthony’s Solar in 2010 and hydropower projects in subsequent years.
Today, under the stewardship of the Gnanam family’s third generation, St. Anthony’s Hardware continues to uphold its founding principles of quality, integrity, and service. Our diverse portfolio and unwavering dedication position us to meet the evolving needs of our customers and contribute to Sri Lanka’s progress.
